Tarjem is a conversation translator for iPhone. It is made and run by Mahmoud Ihmaid, an independent developer ("we"). This page explains what the app collects, why, who helps us process it, how long it is kept and how you can delete it. Questions: [email protected].
In short: to translate what you say, your voice and the text of each turn go to our server and to the speech and translation services listed below. We keep your account, the text of your conversations and your credit history. Audio is only kept if you turn on “Save recordings”, and even then our server deletes it after 30 days. There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking.
What we collect
- Account. Your email address and your password, stored only as a salted scrypt hash. Sign-in sessions are stored as hashes too and last up to 30 days.
- Your voice. When you hold the button, the recording is sent to our server to be turned into text. If “Save recordings” is on (it is off by default), the audio of each turn is also kept on your phone and on our server. A recording that could not be sent yet is kept on your phone, encrypted, for up to 7 days so it can be retried.
- Conversation text. For every turn we store what was said and its translation, which direction it went, and when. This is your conversation history, which you can read and delete in the app.
- Credit and purchases. How much each turn cost (seconds of audio, characters translated), your credit balance and history, and for each top-up the store, product, price, currency and transaction id. Payment itself is handled by Apple; we never see your card.
- Server logs. Like any website, our server records IP addresses, the address requested, the time and the app or browser version, for security and to fix problems. Logs do not contain what you said.
We do not use advertising, analytics or tracking tools, we do not collect advertising or device identifiers, and we do not sell or rent personal data.
Why we use it
- To translate and speak your conversations and show you their history.
- To run your account, sign you in and help you reset a forgotten password.
- To charge credit for what you use, add the credit you buy, and show you where it went.
- To keep the service secure, prevent abuse (for example, a second free trial for the same email) and fix problems.
Who helps us
These companies process data for us only to provide the service:
| Service | What it receives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Deepgram, OpenAI, Google Cloud | The audio of each turn | Speech to text |
| OpenAI | The text to translate | Translation |
| Google Cloud, OpenAI | The translated text | Speaking the translation aloud |
| Google ML Kit | Nothing you say; the app downloads a language model from Google | Arabic ⇄ Portuguese translation on your phone when online translation is off |
| Apple | Your purchase | Payment for credit |
| RevenueCat | Your purchase and an account number (not your email) | Confirming purchases so credit can be added |
| Resend | Your email address and a one-time code | Password reset emails |
| Akamai (Linode) | Everything stored on our server | Hosting the server |
| Cloudflare | Email sent to [email protected] | Domain name and email forwarding |
Some of these providers are in the United States or elsewhere outside your country. They act on our instructions under their own data-protection terms.
The other person in the conversation
Tarjem records whoever speaks, including the person you are talking to. Please tell them you are using a translator before you start, and only turn on “Save recordings” if they agree.
How long we keep it
- Audio on our server: only with “Save recordings” on, and deleted automatically after 30 days.
- Audio on your phone: until you delete it (Settings › Data and privacy). Unsent recordings: up to 7 days.
- Conversation text: until you delete the conversation, or your account is erased.
- Account, credit and purchase records: while your account exists. Purchase records may be kept longer, without your name or email, where tax or accounting rules require it.
- Password reset codes: 15 minutes at most.
Deleting your data
- A conversation: delete it in the app. Its text and any saved audio are removed from our server.
- Your account: Settings › Account › Delete account. Your account is closed right away and you are signed out everywhere. We keep its data in case you change your mind, so we can restore it with its remaining credit.
- Erase everything: email [email protected] from the address on your account and we permanently erase your account, conversations, audio and credit history within 30 days.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, including under Brazil’s LGPD and the EU and UK GDPR, you can ask to see, correct, export or delete your personal data, and object to or limit how we use it. Email [email protected] and we will answer within 30 days. You can also complain to your data-protection authority, such as the ANPD in Brazil.
Security
Connections use HTTPS. Passwords and session tokens are stored only as hashes, your session is kept in the iPhone keychain, and unsent recordings are encrypted on the phone. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data and will tell you about a breach that affects you.
Children
Tarjem is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you think a child has given us data, email us and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date above, and tell you in the app for important changes.
